{"id":82,"date":"2019-04-05T16:12:44","date_gmt":"2019-04-05T16:12:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/garyvanmiert.0438d27.netsolhost.com\/?page_id=82"},"modified":"2026-07-05T23:55:43","modified_gmt":"2026-07-05T23:55:43","slug":"my-story","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/garyvanmiert.com\/","title":{"rendered":"My Story"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-83 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/garyvanmiert.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/GVM-LSP-Flag-1024x948.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"593\" srcset=\"https:\/\/garyvanmiert.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/GVM-LSP-Flag-1024x948.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/garyvanmiert.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/GVM-LSP-Flag-300x278.jpg 300w, https:\/\/garyvanmiert.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/GVM-LSP-Flag-768x711.jpg 768w, https:\/\/garyvanmiert.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/GVM-LSP-Flag.jpg 1907w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/span> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><b>I saw The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show when I was five years old.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>My love for music actually goes back further&#8230;my mother told me that when I was a small child, I took 45 rpm records to bed with me instead of a teddy bear. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><b>After embracing the Beatles, I started tracing the music backwards.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I noticed that the Beatles recorded three Carl Perkins tunes, so I figured this guy must be good if the Beatles covered so many of his songs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>After becoming a Carl Perkins fan, I learned that he was influenced by Hank Williams, so I started listening to Hank.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Rolling Stones named their band after a Muddy Water\u2019s song, so I knew I should check him out as well. And on and on&#8230;.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><b>I had been playing and singing old country and blues songs for years, mostly as a hobby.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I came up with the concept for \u201cThe Sensational Country Blues Wonders!\u201d as a vehicle to start performing and take advantage of the vibrant art and music scene in Jersey City.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I&#8217;m a record collector and I have an extensive collection of old gospel 45&#8217;s. That&#8217;s where I cull a lot of the material I perform and where I got the band&#8217;s name, which is a homage to all the great groups from the golden age of gospel.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> \u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><b>\u201cThe Sensational Country Blues Wonders!\u201d were designed to replicate the original instrumental lineup of acoustic rhythm guitar, electric lead guitar and upright acoustic bass used on the first rock and roll records recorded by Elvis Presley at Sun Studio in Memphis, Tenn. \u00a0 Sam Phillips, founder of Sun Records and Elvis loom large in my list of influences. Other who have inspired me include many seminal figures in American music, such as Hank Williams, Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Brother Joe May, Charlie Feathers, Carl Perkins, Smiley Lewis, Brother Claude Ely, and Ernest Tubb.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Simply put, \u201cThe Sensational Country Blues Wonders!\u201d are the sound of America, starting at the intersection of all it\u2019s best influences!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><b>The band has gigged extensively in Jersey City and Hoboken over the years at many great events like Project Greenville, Riverview Farmers Market,\u00a0 Live at The Lumberyard, Hamilton Park BBQ Festival, Groove on Grove, Liberty State Park Summerfest Concert Series, and JC Fridays.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We\u2019ve shared a bill with national acts Marshall Crenshaw and The Smithereens at the Hoboken Arts &amp; Music Festival.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We\u2019ve opened for Evan Dando (of Lemonheads fame) at Monty Hall.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We\u2019ve performed all over Manhattan and Brooklyn.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I also perform solo as \u201cThe Gospel Wonder\u201d at church services and events.\u00a0 I have a fine, handpicked repertoire of classic Gospel tunes. My singing and performance style has been described as &#8220;an electrifying throwback to the gritty Gospel sounds from the deep South&#8221;.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><b>I\u2019ve picked up some theater experience along the way, p<\/b><b>erforming in a musical production<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>of &#8220;Jacques Brel is Alive and Well &amp; Living in Paris\u201d as well as composing and performing songs for \u201cThe Box\u201d at Jersey City Theater Center.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><b>The music that inspired me was born in Nashville and Memphis Tenn. as well as in the Mississippi Delta.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019ve always been interested in that point where blues, country and gospel music intersect. Elvis Presley and a few others captured lightning in a bottle in the fifties and changed the world. I\u2019ve always had an affinity for this particular brand of American roots music that originated in the South.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been chasing this sound for years now, and having the time of my life doing so.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"caret-color: #000000;\"><b>I&#8217;ve recorded four albums of original material. \u00a0My first album, &#8220;The World Will Break Your Heart&#8221; stayed close to my original country and blues influences. \u00a0My second release, &#8220;The Adventures of a Psychedelic Cowboy&#8221; consists of country and gospel songs, as well as venturing into psychedelic rock. \u00a0My third album, &#8220;If I Stop Moving, I&#8217;ll Fall From the Sky&#8221; is made up of psychedelic pop songs, a genre that was widespread on AM top forty radio and FM stations in the sixties. \u00a0I&#8217;ve continued to refine this sound on my fourth album, &#8220;Music Sounds Better When You&#8217;re Stoned.&#8221; I&#8217;ve thus far traveled from my country, gospel and blues roots to find my own whimsical brand of &#8220;psychedelic Americana&#8221;. \u00a0So the ongoing evolution of my music continues&#8230;\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I saw The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show when I was five years old.\u00a0 My love for music actually goes back further&#8230;my mother told me that when [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":1,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-82","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/garyvanmiert.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/82","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/garyvanmiert.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/garyvanmiert.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/garyvanmiert.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/garyvanmiert.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=82"}],"version-history":[{"count":18,"href":"https:\/\/garyvanmiert.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/82\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":4362,"href":"https:\/\/garyvanmiert.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/82\/revisions\/4362"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/garyvanmiert.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=82"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
